Study
Ekelund and colleagues analyzed associations between physical activity, sitting time, and mortality in a harmonised meta-analysis published in The Lancet.

What Was Observed
Higher physical activity appeared to attenuate the risk associated with sitting time, but sitting remained a useful context variable. The signal is not simply "exercise yes/no".
What It Does Not Prove
This does not prove that every hour of sitting has the same meaning for every person. Work type, breaks, sleep, fitness, illness, and socioeconomic context can all change the interpretation.
Signal vs Noise
Total sitting time is easier to estimate poorly than to measure well. Long uninterrupted blocks, evening screen time, and the absence of movement breaks may matter more than a single daily total.
How Entropy Would Track It
- Total sitting hours.
- Longest uninterrupted sitting block.
- Movement breaks and walking minutes.
- Exercise minutes as a separate input, not a replacement.
Discussion Prompt
If you were designing a 7-day self-experiment, would you track total sitting time, longest sitting block, or movement breaks first?
