What Was Observed
The review found that higher exposure to ultra-processed foods was associated with a wide set of adverse outcomes across the literature. That makes food processing a meaningful signal for population-level research and for careful self-observation.
What It Does Not Prove
It does not prove that one packaged meal caused a specific biological change in one person. Diet studies are vulnerable to confounding, measurement error, recall bias, and differences between food cultures. Ultra-processed food is also a broad category, not a nutrient.
Signal vs Noise
The signal is strongest when repeated exposure patterns are visible. The noise gets larger when a person logs isolated meals without portion, timing, sleep, stress, alcohol, movement, and social context.
How Entropy Would Track It
- Meal processing tier: mostly whole, mixed, packaged, fast-food-heavy.
- Meal timing and snack frequency.
- Sleep, movement, stress, and alcohol on the same day.
- Seven-day pattern, not one meal.
