Meal Timing, Fasting & Metabolic Rhythm · 进食时间、断食与代谢节律

Evidence Note · Nature Communications 2023

Meal timing is a context signal, not just a calorie container.

Later first and last meals were associated with higher cardiovascular risk in large cohort data, but timing should be treated as context, not a verdict.

Study

Palomar-Cros and colleagues analyzed dietary circadian rhythms in the prospective NutriNet-Sante cohort and reported associations between later first and last meals and higher cardiovascular risk. A later NHLBI workshop report and public explainer show that chrononutrition is an active public-health research area, not fringe wellness copy.

What Was Observed

Later first and last meals were associated with higher cardiovascular risk in the cohort, and the broader chrononutrition discussion suggests that timing patterns may carry signal beyond calories alone. The practical takeaway is not to panic about one dinner; it is to look at repeated timing context.

What It Does Not Prove

It does not prove that one late meal harmed one person's heart. It does not isolate timing from sleep schedule, shift work, stress, alcohol, social routine, or total diet quality. It also does not justify treatment claims, prevention certainty, or universal eating windows for every life context.

Signal vs Noise

Meal timing becomes noisy when it is detached from bedtime, fasting window, late-night snacking, and work schedule. A 7-day pattern of first meal, last meal, and sleep context is more defensible than treating one late dinner as a moral failure.

What To Track For 7 Days

  • First meal time.
  • Last meal time.
  • Overnight fasting window.
  • Bedtime.
  • Late-night snack or alcohol flag.

Discussion Prompt

For a 7-day self-tracking experiment, which timing signal would you log first: first meal, last meal, fasting window, or how close dinner lands to bedtime?
